Android is playing down the severity of the recent attack on its popular Android Forums servers. While acknowledging the hack, the mobile operating system is quick to point out that the breach only affected a small percentage of its users and that a limited amount of data was accessed.
Nevertheless, Android has initiated password resets and also implemented HTTPS, two-step authentication and randomising of passwords for inactive accounts.
The motive behind the hack is unclear. It could have been aimed at harvesting email addresses for a phishing campaign, a grudge attack or simply a practice exercise – so hopefully no great cause for alarm. Yet it does illustrate the vulnerability of community platforms and forum sites, popular targets for hackers as they contain plenty of personal information have often evolved from fairly basic site set-ups.
