UK Prime Minister Theresa May is calling on European leaders to take tougher action on governments and regimes that are found responsible for cyberattacks. The news comes amongst reports that a Russian group has been accused of meddling in the US midterm elections.
“Malign cyber activity causes harm to our economies, and undermines our democracies. As well as protecting ourselves against attack, we must impose proportionate consequences on those who would do us harm,” she said.
The Guardian reports that May wants to emphasize that post-Brexit Britain will still look to cooperate with EU on security matters. As part of the fight against cyber warfare, she has said she would enforce a sanctions regime akin to those imposed for more traditional foreign threats.
