Multinational tech heavyweight Cisco has issued a recent report emphasising the growing threat from ransomware. In the battle for control of the internet, hackers are deploying ever more sophisticated weaponry, while federal agencies are struggling to keep pace.
In particular, malicious actors are exploiting the growth in encrypted web traffic to cover their tracks. Ransomware now features in well over half of all malware attacks, with an increase in fully automated exploits that don’t require any human input. DDoS attacks using IoT botnets are also on the rise.
It seems that the motive of more attackers than ever is the desire to disrupt critical infrastructure, rather than mere financial gain. Better use of cybersecurity at the network edge, AI and machine learning are likely to be the most effective counter measures.
