Hundreds of files of confidential political research produced by the Democratic Party continue to be leaked after last week’s hack attack. US security firm Crowdstrike had revealed that two groups of Russian hackers were implicated in the break-in targeting the Democratic National Congress’s computer network – stealing research on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The hackers, dubbed Cozy Bear and Fancy Bear, work independently and use different entry techniques. They are believed to be involved in extensive political and economic espionage on behalf of the Russian Government and its intelligence services, and have previously breached targets from the White House and the State Department.
Political hacking is nothing new and will undoubtedly continue, but this latest example raises concerns about foreign powers trying to exert influence over the outcome of democratic elections.
