In the era of DNA profiling, dusting for fingerprints may seem like a rather quaint old crime-busting technology. Nevertheless, in the world of cyber security it is poised to eclipse the password and the PIN number.
A tech supergroup comprising Lenovo, Intel, Synaptics and PayPal are collaborating to develop a biometric authentication system – using Lenovo’s laptops, Intel’s hardware security and Synaptic’s biometric fingerprint technology to verify people’s identities while using online payment services such as PayPal.
As well as fingerprint sensors, voice and facial recognition and retinal scanning are all growing in popularity as reliable authentication solutions to strengthen digital security. While it may seem like yet another step towards ever more invasive Big Data, the realisation that passwords and 2-factor authentication no longer provide adequate security is driving the move towards more unique identification methods.
