The Federal Government of Germany’s IT network is currently under serious cyberattack, apparently from notorious Russian state-sponsored hacking group Fancy Bear – prime suspects in previous federal disruptions in Germany, as well as interference in the US presidential election.
It appears that the principle targets in the latest offensive against the Bundestag are the ministries of defence and the interior. The authorities initially believed they had the attack under control, but it now seems to have escalated. While they acknowledge that the attack is significant, they are reluctant to go into any detail in case it gives assistance to the protagonists.
As always, whether it’s a cyberattack or a lethal dose of nerve agent, the Russian state is remaining stumm.
