When it comes to taking the bait of a bogus email, apparently humans are not much more discerning than your average trout or mackerel. If Facebook and Google can be conned out of $100m by a phishing scam, what hope is there for the rest of us?
UK research suggests that over 50% of SMEs have been victims of a cybersecurity breach in the last twelve months, three quarters of which have involved fraudulent emails. It is our natural human tendency to accede to any reasonable request, making us vulnerable to a well thought out phishing attack.
There are some precautions we can take, however – utilise spam and security filters, establish a security-conscious culture, set up an early warning system, review social media privacy and be wary of scam phone calls.
With over half of UK SMEs claiming their insurance brokers aren’t discussing cyber risks and insurance options with them, this makes for worrying trends.
