German sportswear giant Adidas has admitted to being the victim of a hack that has compromised the personal data of millions of customers who have made purchases via its US website. It doesn’t appear that any financial or fitness information has been taken, however; and hackers would need to unencrypt users’ passwords in order to exploit them.
Adidas has been fast on its feet in deploying cybersecurity experts and law enforcers to undertake a full forensic investigation. It is also in the process of notifying any customers whose data has been breached.
As one of FIFA’s partners at the World Cup, the timing of the incursion is not ideal publicity.
