The new front line in the world of cyber attacks? Medical professionals and specifically, hospitals. Hospitals are increasingly vulnerable because although they may be running perfectly serviceable programmes, much of the equipment is not user-serviceable so won’t feature the latest updates. A potential hallmark of these attacks is to install malware that sits unnoticed as the device continues to function normally so users remain unaware.
Concerns are that patient data may be accessed and that ultimately this information will be used in one of several ways to gain financial advantage. Others have speculated on direct interference with medical devices for more sinister ends affecting patient safety.
Hospitals are now being advised that their infection control needs to be thought of as more widespread than a purely biological threat.
