One of Melbourne’s largest hospitals has recently been the victim of a computer virus leaving a trail of chaos in its wake. As the majority of hospital processes, including appointment scheduling and medical history records, are reliant upon the use of a computer network the hospital has had to revert back to manual processes. As a result, it is only dealing with the most urgent of requests, and even the food service for patients has been affected.
Melbourne Health runs not only Melbourne hospital but a wider network of health services in the region. They have issued a statement confirming the disruption but maintaining that they continue to ensure the fallout for patients is kept to a minimum. The spokesperson would not, however, comment on whether patient records had been the target of unauthorised access. The identity of the cyber criminals remains unknown as well.
