Apple Macs may be at risk from a malware which has originated from a company called HackingTeam who, amongst other products, produce surveillance software for governments. Ironically, HackingTeam was itself the subject of an attack in July last year where a large quantity of sensitive data was revealed, including the company’s connections with different governments. This provided plenty of ammunition for critics of HackingTeam who have been condemned in the past for doing business with governments that have a less than savoury human rights record.
This malware recently produced by HackingTeam is of the “dropper” variety, unobtrusively installing HackingTeam’s Remote Control System on a computer. It is programmed to work on the OS X system which all of Apple’s Mac computers run on.
