American security firm Zscaler has discovered malware in an over-18 app called Adult Player which takes photographs of unsuspecting victims whilst they browse various images and then demands as much as $500 from users to destroy the photos and unlock the device. Victims were lured to the app with seductive and pornographic photographs.
This latest attack is part of a growing trend towards the use of ransomware, which is malware that can only be removed or neutralised by the payment of money. Until now, ransomware has been more likely to appear on a laptop or a computer rather than a phone.
The use of pornography is strategic as most users would not want to highlight their use of this app and are more likely to pay than risk discovery.
