Memory stick IBM’s security chief has placed a ban on staff using USB sticks and other memory devices, as she considers them to be a security risk. The fear is that they are vulnerable to hacking, malware, loss or misuse.

While some external observers consider this to be a prudent safety measure, others feel that it is more of a token gesture; paying lip service to the advent of GDPR. In terms of physical loss, laptops and other devices are equally insecure and vulnerable to malicious activity.

Big Blue’s employs number nearly 400,000 people worldwide. This move is likely to cause them some inconvenience and necessitate changes in their working practices.
