Mobile phones continue to be hit by ransomwareA recent discussion on BBC Radio 4’s PM programme featured individuals who have had either their phones or computers locked, coupled with a demand for money to release the device from its disabled state. This is called ransomware – the clue is in the name. The amounts demanded as ransom money varied from less than $100 to up to $1,000, but regardless, it’s clear this is a lucrative business for cyber criminals.

Some of those featured on Radio 4 did pay up whilst others retrieved data via a different route, however, not all data returned is seemingly usable, meaning the consequences of this type of attach may well extend beyond the cash value of the ransom paid. A fairly easy and certainly low-risk type of criminal activity, ransomware is likely to see a lot of growth in the near future. An interesting choice for the BBC and certainly one which will have raised awareness of this growing threat. one which will see much more growth in the near future.
