NHS BuildingThe NHS’s seventieth anniversary celebrations have been somewhat tarnished by the revelation that the confidential medical records of 150,000 patients have not remained confidential after all – contrary to their express wishes.

The patients had assumed that health data stored on the NHS’s Digital IT system would be kept private but, due to a supplier’s coding error, their preference for privacy failed to register – and their data may have been shared with universities, health research companies and other such organisations.

NHS Digital has apologised and assured all patients that the fault has been rectified; with no chance of it reoccurring. In future, patients will have direct control of their data as part of the new national data opt-out.
