Yellow folder and lock. Data security concept. 3D isolatedA Hospital and Medical centre in Hartford, Connecticut, has notified 858 patients of a data breach after their paper records were stolen from the car of a member of staff. The theft took place on December 27th 2013.

In a statement, the hospital identified the physician as Bindu Vanapalli, M.D., an independent contractor working in the emergency department, and noted that removal of patient information from the hospital violates policy and disciplinary action has been taken.

Compromised information included: names, date of birth and each patient’s medical record number. According to the hospital, there has been no proof as of yet that the information as of yet.

While Social Security numbers, financial information and addresses were not on the papers, the hospital is offering affected patients up to two years of credit monitoring services.
