Security firm Symantec has revealed that ransomware attacks are growing in number, sophistication and menace. This has resulted in a rise of average demands from just over £200 to around £500 since the start of 2016.
“Ransomware has quickly emerged as one of the most dangerous cyberthreats facing both organisations and consumers” the report reads. While individuals are still being targeted, the main growth in ransom demands has been against large organisations – the services sector is suffering most, followed by manufacturing, public administration, finance, insurance and property. Hospitals and universities are also particularly at risk.
Between January 2015 and April 2016, the US was the largest victim of ransomware attacks accounting for 31% of global infections, followed by Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
