Ransomware, your worst nightmareIf you think Ransomware is a nuisance now, brace yourself – it’s about to get a whole lot worse as malware becomes ever more sophisticated and insidious. Ransomware, of course, is a type of malware that holds a large collection of data hostage on a victim’s computer; including important documents, photos and videos. It allows criminals to effectively kidnap data and then sell it back to the victim; whether that is an individual, a business or an organisation storing large quantities of sensitive data – a hospital, for instance. The latter has been a popular target with recent incidents in the US and Australia highlighting healthcare institutions’ vulnerability.

Cyber criminals count on exactly this soft spot – and are raking in the money. So how to prevent falling victim to ransomware? Make sure your anti-virus is up to date and that you have a contingency plan in place in case the unimaginable actually happens. And, as always, keep an eye out for suspicious activity.
