A brother and sister hacking team has gained access to the private emails of two former Italian Prime Ministers, plus senior businessmen, bankers, a security chief and even a Vatican cardinal.
The FBI is assisting the Italian police with their investigations, as the campaign targeted victims in the US as well as Europe and the hacked information was stored on US servers. The attackers’ motive for stealing state secrets and other confidential information is not yet clear, but a combination of power and financial gain appears to be the main driver behind the raids on at least 18,000 email accounts.
the case is interesting in that it puts a face on a crime that is usually, by its very nature, anonymous – think Guy Fawkes masks and hooded individuals. After having lived the high life for several years, their hacking spree is now over and both face lengthy prison sentences.
