Apple has revealed that some of its Chinese users, frustrated with slow download speeds of its Xcode programme, have been infected with malware by turning to unofficial versions of Xcode instead. Apple has announced that they will improve download speeds in China although the difficulties would seem to lie with the level of censorship that operates within the country and a lack of highspeed internet connections nationally.
Xcode is the tool used to build apps for the Apple operating system and the suspect versions allowed cyber criminals to harvest users’ data. Figures have not yet been confirmed as to how many apps have been affected but it is thought that it could run into the thousands. Apple has a particularly good record when it comes to malware security so this latest development is a real blow to their reputation for security.
