After initial media stories indicated that up to four million customers may have had their data breached, the communications company TalkTalk has now given a more accurate picture of how many customers were affected in the October 21st cyber attack.
Around 157,000 people have been affected and approximately 15,000 customers have had their bank account details harvested, though this would not be enough on its own to support unlawful access to accounts. The real worry with this kind of data is that it could cause problems over the coming months when the attack is long forgotten and the information used for scam phone calls and emails.
TalkTalk has already begun to process of contacting those affected. Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack, three of whom are reported to be teenagers. All have been released on police bail with no charges brought against them at the current time.
