Almost four million cyber crime offences were committed in Britain last year, accounting for nearly 40% of all recorded criminal incidents.
SMEs with finite security resources are particularly vulnerable to attacks such as ransomware, phishing and DDoS, which not only lead to financial loss but also fines, erosion of client confidence and even closure of the business. Investment in technology and staff training is critical – and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
The first priority is to establish what’s needed – tapping into all available government, industry and peer group advice. The next step is to keep it simple by implementing effective firewalls, anti-virus tools and password etiquette. Make sure everything is updated regularly and instill a culture of security awareness amongst all staff.
