The group Anonymous has claimed responsibility for an attack on a US government website, resulting in access to sensitive employee details. The department in question is the United States Census Bureau and the hackers have harvested personal information about employees which has been published online. Of more concern, however, is the remit of this department, which gathers data on every US resident once every ten years as well as information about the economy on a more frequent basis.
The motivation behind the attack would seem to be two new agreements which the Obama administration has drawn up with the level of secrecy surrounding these agreements forming the basis of the objection from Anonymous. The US Government has faced worse security breaches than this but there is a level of embarrassment associated with this latest incident nonetheless.
