The rickety US electoral system is once again under the spotlight. It now appears that some voting machines are so ancient that it is almost impossible to tell whether or not they have been hacked.
More than three quarters of US states have voting machines that are over ten years old – practically medieval in technological terms. Furthermore, most don’t have facilities for a paper-based backup – rendering verification unworkable and interference undetectable.
Confidence in electoral integrity is already seriously eroded. Considering the huge amounts of money candidates spend on electioneering, it’s ironic that so little is being invested into ensuring the veracity of the votes.
