The Russian officers stand accused of hacking into the Democratic National Committee’s emails, in order to undermine Hilary Clinton’s election campaign. They are believed to have used bitcoins to buy into servers and register domains; using them to steal documents, undertake identity theft, launder money and interfere with the outcome of the election.

While their activities are not thought to have affected the final result of the vote, any interference in an election by a foreign state has to pose a serious threat to the free and fair democratic process.
