Moonfruit, a website that helps users design and build their own websites, has been the victim of an attack on its main servers by a group called the Armada Collective. The Armada Collective overloaded Moonfruit’s servers with illegal traffic on December 10th, effectively creating a distributed denial of service (DDoS) situation accompanied by a demand for money. In response to the attack, Moonfruit took all of its websites down for several hours for its array of business and private customers. The temporary closure of the sites according to the company was to make internal changes to boost protection against further attacks and Moonfruit assured customers that their personal data was not at risk.
The Armada Collective is known for this type of attack, designed to cause maximum disruption to businesses and organisations rather than to constitute an onslaught on personal and sensitive information.
Moonfruit issued guidelines to their customers on how to reconfigure sites in order to increase their security protection with the added benefit of faster loading speeds as well.
