A class action lawsuit has been filed against Internet giant Yahoo for gross negligence. Yahoo suffered a massive data breach in 2014 that affected over 500 million user accounts. A purported state-sponsored actor compromised sensitive user information; including names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and encrypted passwords.
The lawsuit alleges that Yahoo, which is currently in the midst of negotiating a $4.8bn takeover by telecom behemoth Verizon, showed a reckless disregard for the safety and security of users’ personal information. It did so whilst being fully briefed on and aware of very real threats to the security of its data.
